Polo or oxford — match it to your week
The four questions buyers ask
Which cut should I take?
Custom Slim is the safe modern middle for most builds. Classic if you want room or layer underneath; Slim only if you're lean or wearing it tucked sharp. The full decoder is on our Ralph Lauren brand page — same size, very different shirts.
True to size?
Yes, within each cut. Between sizes: go up in Custom Slim and Slim, down in Classic. Polos and oxfords size the same way, so once you know your combination, it repeats across every colour.
Which colours first?
Oxfords: white and blue — they carry every outfit you own. Polos: navy or a true colour you'll reach for (green, red, sky). The pastels and stripes come after the base is set, not before.
Standard or big pony?
The standard small pony is the timeless read and works everywhere. The oversized pony is a louder, sportier statement — great on a weekend polo, out of place under a blazer. When in doubt, standard.
The layer test
A quick check that sorts the wardrobe: everything on this page should disappear cleanly under a Ralph Lauren jacket. The oxford's button-down collar was designed exactly for that — it sits flat under a harrington or quilted jacket without a collar stay in sight. Polos layer too, but the ribbed collar prefers to be the top layer; if your week is jacket-heavy, weight the order toward oxfords.
Care that keeps them for a decade
Oxfords: cold or warm wash, hang immediately, iron while slightly damp — the collar and placket are where the crispness lives. Skip the dryer; it's what shrinks sleeves and curls collars. Polos: cold wash inside out, air-dry flat or hung, and never iron over the pony. The mesh knit pills only when it meets a hot dryer or rough velcro — avoid both and a polo outlives its colour trends twice over.
