Arc’teryx Jackets

Three kinds of jacket. Buy the wrong one and you’ll be either wet or sweating.

Arc’teryx splits outerwear into waterproof shells, insulated jackets and softshells — and the names tell you which is which once you know the code. This page sorts it out for Australian conditions, from the Snowy Mountains to a Melbourne tram stop.

  • Gore-Tex shells: taped seams, fully waterproof
  • Insulated: synthetic or down, for cold and dry
  • Softshell: stretch, wind-resistant, breathes hard

ShellRain, snow, wind. Beta family. The one you wear over everything.

Which jacket? Find your line

Forget the model names for a second. Answer where you'll wear it most, and the category picks itself.

Skiing, snowboarding, or any multi-day hike where rain is likely
→ Gore-Tex shell
Winter commute in Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart — cold, sometimes damp
→ Insulated (synthetic)
Very cold and dry — alpine mornings, Central Australia in July
→ Insulated (down)
Trail running, fast hiking, cycling in cool weather
→ Softshell
One jacket for everything, you're not sure
→ Shell + a thin insulated layer under it

The last line is the honest answer for most Australians: a Beta shell and an Atom underneath cover 90% of what the country throws at you.

The families, decoded

Arc'teryx names jackets by family, then by weight. The family tells you the job; the suffix tells you how heavy-duty.

Family Type Waterproof? Where it earns its keep in Australia
Beta Gore-Tex shell Yes, fully Alps, Tasmania, any real rain. The all-rounder.
Alpha Gore-Tex shell, climbing cut Yes, fully Harness-compatible, minimal. Overkill unless you climb.
Atom Synthetic insulation Water-resistant City winters, under a shell, camp evenings. Still warm when damp.
Cerium Down insulation Water-resistant Cold and dry only. Packs tiny. Not for wet days.
Gamma Softshell No — wind-resistant Fast movement, Blue Mountains, cool-dry days.
Reading the suffix
SL = superlight, packs smallest, thinnest fabric. LT = lightweight, the sweet spot for most people. AR = all-round, tougher fabric, more features. SV = severe weather, the burliest, built for weeks in bad conditions. For Australia, LT or AR is almost always right — SV is more jacket than the country needs.

Sizing, answered

Fit

How do Arc'teryx jackets fit?

Athletic. Trim through the waist, room across the shoulders, arms cut long so cuffs don't ride up when you reach. Not boxy, not slim-fashion either.

Layering

Do I size up for a shell?

Usually no. Shells are cut with layering room built in. Go up only if you'll regularly wear a thick fleece or an insulated jacket underneath. Check the chest measurement on the product page.

Insulated

And for an Atom or Cerium?

Take your normal size. These are designed to fit close so they trap heat — a loose insulated jacket is a cold one.

Length

Are they long enough?

Hip length with a slight drop at the back. Men's and women's cuts differ — women's is shaped at the waist and shorter in the arm. Don't cross over just because the colour is better.

Under any of these, a quick-dry Arc'teryx shirt is the base layer that stops sweat sitting against you. On top, a beanie fills the gap a hood leaves when it's up.

Keeping the waterproofing alive

A Gore-Tex shell doesn't wear out — it gets dirty. Body oil and grime block the membrane, and the outer fabric stops beading. All of it is fixable at home.

🧼 Wash it more, not less

Cold cycle, technical wash (not normal detergent), zips closed. Every few weeks in heavy use.

🌡️ Tumble low, 20 minutes

Heat reactivates the DWR finish. This is the step people skip and then think the jacket is broken.

💧 Re-proof when it stops beading

Spray-on DWR after washing. Insulated jackets: wash cold, dry with tennis balls to loft the fill.
